You’ve decided to build a custom home. You’re excited, but not exactly sure where to start. Here are four important tips from the pros at Cormack Construction.

1. Know what you want.

Take some time to visualize what you’d like your new home to look like. What style and size home do you want? What features would you like to have? Make a list of wants (things it would be nice to have) and needs (things you must have) for your new custom home. Be realistic about what you can afford to spend. Whether you’re building a new home to enjoy during your retirement years, or to raise a family, a little planning can save you a lot of time and money in the long run. 2. Hire an architect.

Ideally, you should hire an experienced architect before you buy your land. Among other things, an architect can tell you:

  • how suitable a lot is
  • what type of home can and can’t be built on it
  • where to place your home for the best views, shade, sunlight, etc.

You’ll want to share your list of wants and needs with your architect, who can help you decide which features are worth considering for your price range.

Cormack offers in-house architects and designers who work closely with our home builders. This makes the entire custom home building process easier for everyone. Contact us to learn more about our architectural services.

3. Get a 3-D design of your house plan.

“3-D design gives you a better sense of how your home will look and function before you approve any specs or designs, explains David Norton, designer at Cormack Construction. Having a chance to virtually walk around your home and make any needed changes before construction begins can save you a lot of time and money.

4. Work with a quality, experienced builder.

Your home is likely your largest investment so you want to choose a quality contractor who makes the building process as easy as possible for you.  Read these tips to make sure you select the right home builder for your needs.
