After cabinet refinishing, replacement hardware, and new wide-board flooring, this kitchen is dazzling with cottage style.

For the past ten or so years, bright, white kitchens have been garnering attention nearly everywhere we turn. Maybe it’s the light and airy feel, clean lines, or the calming simplicity they bring in an increasingly cluttered and complicated world.

But after a while, a bright, white kitchen can lose its sparkle, becoming dull and worn. This was the case with a kitchen belonging to a New Hampshire family. While they loved their cottage-style kitchen, they knew it needed some attention.

Before: This cozy kitchen was feeling a little worn and dull, but its cabinetry was solid and worth saving.

Fit for a Facelift

After meeting with the homeowners, the Cormack team spent some time inspecting their cabinetry. “It was solid with good ‘bones.’ There were no cracks or warping, and for the most part, the cabinets met their storage needs,” says Simon Thomas of The Wood Works, Cormack’s woodworking shop. “We saw no need to rip them out and replace them,” he adds. He told the homeowners their kitchen was a perfect candidate for cabinet refinishing.

Let the Cabinet Refinishing Begin

The Cormack team removed all of the cabinet hinges, doors, and drawers, and brought them back to the shop. There, the cabinets were thoroughly cleaned, sanded, and prepped for painting. “We gave them a beautiful coat of bright, white paint, which provided a fresh, new look to their kitchen,” Thomas notes. Because the majority of the work was done off-site, there was little disruption to the homeowners

Cottage-inspired kitchen drawer pulls, which are available in a variety of finishes, help bring the cottage kitchen look together.

Cottage-Inspired Hardware

While some clients have Cormack refinish their hardware, the homeowners opted to replace their existing hinges, knobs, and drawer pulls with cottage-inspired hardware. “Bin pulls, while a seemingly small design element, really contribute to the look and feel of this cottage-style kitchen,” Thomas points out.

Wide-Board Floors

The homeowners chose to replace their existing tile floors with wide-board flooring. Nothing says cottage kitchen quite like it. They chose a light, natural finish, which really made their newly-finished cabinets pop.

Saving Time & Money

Within a couple of weeks, this cottage kitchen makeover was complete. And because the homeowners refinished their cabinets instead of replacing them, they saved thousands of dollars. Their cabinets now have an updated, fresh look, with a durable, washable finish that will last for many years.
