When it comes to a kitchen remodeling project, the smallest details can make a big difference. And sometimes—like when it comes to selecting your backsplash—the decisions around these finishing details can be tough to make. If you’re struggling with selecting the perfect backsplash for your kitchen renovation, here are some tips from Cormack’s home remodeling pros.

1. Consider your material options.

While there are numerous backsplash options on the market, ceramic, glass, and stone tiles are the most popular.

Ceramic tile, a perennial favorite, is affordable, lightweight, and easy to clean and maintain. It comes in many sizes, shapes, and colors.

Glass tile is harder to install, and therefore more expensive. Since it's slightly transparent, you can go a little bolder with your color choices, adding a unique and visually intriguing design element to your kitchen. Glass, like ceramic, is also easy to clean and maintain.

Stone tile—including granite, quartz, and marble— can be a luxurious add-on to virtually any kitchen design. However, it is your priciest option. This is why some homeowners use it as an accent in their kitchens. Note: some stone tiling, including marble, require more maintenance and care, and may be prone to chipping, cracking, and staining.

Whatever material you choose will contribute to the overall style and design of your kitchen. Matte, metallic, and glossy tiles will add a luxurious look; while textured stone will provide a rustic appearance.

2. Pick a pattern that suits your style.

It’s important to note that your tile backsplash pattern—not just its color or material—can drastically change the look of your kitchen. For example, a white subway tile could be arranged in a traditional offset horizontal manner, in a herringbone pattern, or vertically for an entirely unique effect.

Pro Tip:  Want to make your backsplash unique? Add some custom, handmade tiles to create a one-of-a-kind kitchen.

 3. Don’t clash with your countertops.

It’s essential that your backsplash complements, not competes with your countertops. For example, if you have a dark granite countertop with strong veining, you should select a simple, neutral backsplash. Likewise, if you have a plain white or cream countertop, you’ll want to pick a backsplash with some texture and/or color to add visual appeal.

4. Don’t forget about your focal point.

Your backsplash can make a brilliant focal point in your kitchen, especially if the rest of your space is minimal. For example, patterned mosaic tiles or brightly colored glass tiles could add some character and excitement to an otherwise neutral kitchen. However, if your kitchen already has one or more focal points, opt for a simpler, neutral tile backsplash.

 5. Keep with tradition.

With today’s material options, there are many fun and unique ways to design your kitchen backsplash. However, if you plan to sell your home in the near future, choose a timeless design.
