Creating a relaxing and welcoming retreat for visitors can be a lot of fun. And when it comes to hosting guests, there’s no greater compliment than hearing that they feel comfortable in your home. With some planning and attention to key design principles, you can create a guest bedroom that no one will want to leave!
1. Start with calming colors.
To create a calm and relaxing space for your guests, use soft, neutral colors (light grays, beiges, blues, or sage greens) for the walls, bedding, and furnishings. These colors tend to have universal visual appeal. Add accent colors with pillows, throw blankets, and curtains—but don’t use anything too bold to avoid stimulation.
2. Invest in comfort.
Invest in a quality, medium-plush mattress with a protective cover. Make the bed with soft linens, cozy pillows, and a warm duvet or comforter.
3. Light it up.
Lighting is an essential design element that can completely change the feel of a room. Layer different types of soft and warm lighting for a comfortable environment, including:
Overhead Lighting: Install a dimmable light fixture or ceiling fan with a light so guests can adjust the brightness.
Task Lighting: Add a bedside lamp or wall sconces with adjustable arms for reading.
Accent lighting: Bring extra warmth and ambiance to your guest bedroom with string lights, battery-operated candles, or a soft nightlight.
4. Don't forget about storage.
Add a closet, shelf, or drawer space so guests can unpack and settle in. If you have a small or awkwardly shaped space, consider custom built-ins and storage solutions from The Woodworks, Cormack’s woodworking division. Add a luggage stand if you have the space.
5. Warm it up.
Place a washable scatter rug on the floor and leave out an extra blanket or two for added warmth.
6. Add some extra touches.
You can elevate your guests’ experience by adding any of the following:
A Fresh Set of Towels
Water Pitcher or Water Bottles
Extra Toiletries
Charging Cords or Stations
Television with Remote
Fresh Flowers
Creating a guest bedroom is about more than just making it look nice—it’s about making a space where visitors can unwind, relax, and enjoy some of the comforts of home.
