Nothing says “welcome” more than a warm and festive holiday home. This season, we offer several tips to help you create an inviting space using decorating strategies that embrace the joy and celebration of the holidays.
1. Start early.
Each home has a variety of spaces and a collection of decor gathered over the years, which can make the idea of decorating overwhelming. The key to a well-decorated home (and stress-free decorator) is to create your plan and start early.
2. Choose a theme.
Picking an overall decor theme for your home or one for each room gives the space a cohesive feel.
3. Focus on the main spaces.
Use the majority of your chosen decor in gathering areas of your home, such as the living room, kitchen, and dining room. Use simple small pieces, such as a holiday candle, in bathrooms, hallways, and bedrooms.
4. Don’t forget the music.
Playing holiday music is an easy way to set the holiday mood and experience the joy of the season with your sense of hearing.
5. Add in seasonal scents.
Making a stovetop potpourri, diffusing essential oils, or lighting scented candles captures the mood of the moment, and provides you and your guests with a fond memory of holidays past.
6. Experiment with different holiday hues.
Instead of using just the standard colors of the season, try some other hues—like whites and purples—in your accent pieces. The Pantone Color of the Year, “Very Peri,” a dusky purple with blue-gray undertones, opens the door for purple decor in all shades of the spectrum. If you prefer to keep with classic holiday colors, try for darker shades, such as cranberry red or forest green.
7. Dim the lights.
Bring instant ambiance to any room by adding plug-in dimmers for all your lamps. They are inexpensive, sold at most hardware stores, and anyone can install them.
Pro Tip: Spread out lights throughout your home to prevent overloading a circuit and blowing a fuse. Light timers are a great way to regulate your total circuit usage. Use a smart cord that will alert you when you’re plugging in too much.
8. Repetition can be very effective.
The same candle lining the mantle and tables, and other repetitions can make for a strong design strategy and very attractive decor.
9. Be strategic with outdoor decorations.
Boost your holiday curb appeal by framing your front door with festive seasonal decor. Use natural items such as pine cones, birch log pieces, and evergreen sprigs to create holiday planters for your front steps or porch. Opt for one lit wreath on your front door that will look festive during the day and night. Be sure you’re using outside extension cords for your outdoor decor.
10. Add cozy and comfortable textiles.
Think fuzzy, heavily textured pillows and soft, luxe throw blankets to accent a living room or guest room with a pop of holiday color.
11. Keep it simple.
The holidays don’t have to be all about extravagance. When it comes to decking the halls, try a less-is-more approach. Let simplicity and your personal style be your guide when decorating for the season.
